Looking Back on Fifty Years

FAVORITE MEMORIES OF WILLIAMS

What I said in our 25th reunion book in 1997 still holds true for me today—even more so.

“I look back on my time at Williams with increasing fondness. I do wish I had taken better advantage of my time there, but it still holds great meaning in my life, both in terms of the people whom I met and the things I learned. I know that during my time at Williams, I learned far more than I can now remember and far less than I should have. As they say, it is a shame that youth is wasted on the young.”

LIFE SINCE GRADUATION

After spending nearly 35 years teaching at the Southern Illinois University School of Law, focusing on health law, I retired in 2014. I enjoyed a rich professional life. I had a remarkable opportunity to work with many wonderful students and some great colleagues. It was a tremendously rewarding ride.

And now, I love now being retired. I have the time and the chance to do things I enjoy, like traveling, working outdoors in the garden and on our land, hiking, binding books, and spending time with family and friends. I have remained active in the community with the state bar association, on the board of our regional hospital system, and as a member of our Unitarian Fellowship.

The best part of my life has been with my wife, Laura, and our two sons. Laura and I were married in 1975. After some moving around, we settled here in Southern Illinois in 1980. We were joined at our home in the country, surrounded by forests and fields, by our sons, Will, born in 1984 and Rob, in 1988. Each day I feel more intensely how blessed I am by them.

The pandemic has tested us all for the last couple of years. It has been a struggle. But thankfully, with family and friends, I know we will come out on the other side and be just fine.
