Quote: “Each man’s life represents a road toward himself, an attempt at such a road, the intimation of a path. No man has ever been entirely and completely himself. Yet each one strives to become that-one in an awkward, the other in a more intelligent way, each as best he can.” — Hesse

LIFE SINCE GRADUATION

A simple life has suited me well.

I feel fortunate and I am grateful. The last 20 years were spent farming and practicing architecture as a one-person office on Kaua’i. I still draw with a pencil and answer my own phone. Prior to that I did essentially the same thing in northern Vermont. I was also on the faculty at Middlebury College. As the prospect of aging becomes increasingly real, I anticipate spending more time with friends and family in Vermont. My sensibilities have become Polynesian, which promises to provide for challenging conundrums.

There were two lovely wives and five marvelous children over the years, but no new ones recently. Life is serene and solitary. My health has been generally good. I try not to push my guardian angels past their diminishing capacities. The Pacific and the weather are the primary influences on my daily life.

Williams-in-India continues to inform my interest and participation in South Asia, and in India in particular. Adventures now require an afternoon nap and a sensible bedtime. A comfortable destination has become marginally more important. There is always one more enigma to stumble over somewhere on the journey to the East. I am graced with a road that has numerous switchbacks and vantage points, as well as a great deal of heart.

The most significant change is that I am painting much more regularly. I am delighted to be on a fun bus, which seems to have plenty of gas. I will ride it as far as this road will take me.
