LIFE SINCE GRADUATION

I grew up in Washington, DC, when it was a small town. I attended public schools through high school. A couple of summer programs at Andover stimulated interest in small New England colleges. No one I knew had ever heard of Williams College. Everyone thought I was at William and Mary. MD degree at U. of Pa. in Philadelphia. Then internal medicine residency at Chapel Hill, N.C. Finally, gastroenterology fellowship in New Haven. First place I looked to practice medicine was Williamstown but found that someone in my specialty beat me to it by a year. Bennington, Vt., was next best place, 12 miles north. Spent 37 years in same office with excellent colleagues and a superb small community hospital. Lived in Bennington for 10 years but moved to Williamstown for kids to attend excellent public schools. Was a good choice for them, as they ended up in NESCAC schools, Colby and Middlebury. Move was a good choice for us for social reasons and to be able to take advantage of the college and local culture. Also had the pleasure of living in Williamstown with classmates and fellow chemistry majors Skip Durning and Doug Herr.

Living in Williamstown has been a joy. It has afforded me and my family access to good education, a beautiful physical environment, outdoor opportunities, cultural venues, college activities, and good friends. I have been retired for three years, after a long and rewarding career in medicine.

I feel that my Williams experience taught me to rigorously explore my life and the world around me. My education gave me insight to appreciate multiple views in the assessment of issues and attitudes of others. I have deep gratitude for the time and effort that Williams College invested in me.

Presently, my wife and I are thrilled to be healthy enough to enjoy our wonderful family, including grandkids ages four, five, six, and eight—all of whom are within driving distance.
